The Sword of Persia 1

 Nader Shah

From Tribal Warrior to Conquering Tyrant

 Michael Axworthy

The massacre of perhaps 30.000 people perpetrated by Nader while he was in Delhi would hardly have been an auspicious curtain raiser for permanent Persian rule there. In the event, it was a foretaste of what was to follow not in 🇮🇳, but in 🇮🇷. Before the massacre, in contrast to many of his reign, atrocity piled upon atrocity. Nader lengthened the delay by ordering that his men and their baggage be searched. He declared that no-one should be allowed to take more than a limited value of money or valuables out of 🇮🇳, and that all jewels should be given up. Some men buried their plunder or threw it into the river rather than hand it over. Perhaps some of it is still there. Nader did this partly because he wanted to keep his men dependent on their pay. He must have feared that otherwise many of them would desert.

While several cities lay claim to the biblical #Daniel's last resting place, within Iran both Jews and Muslims agree that this ornate Khuzestani ourchin dome (pine-cone-shaped tower) marks the spot. In the Bible, Daniel's claim to fame was surviving the lions' den in Babylon, though there's no mention of his burial.
